  Open Gardens in South East Queensland

FREE GUIDED WALKS - Take advantage of the expertise of volunteer guides by taking one of these free guided walks. Bookings are not required. Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha, 152 Mount Coot-tha Rd, Mount Coot-tha. City Botanic Gardens, Alice St, Brisbane City. Roma Street Parklands, 1 Parkland Boulevard, Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane City. Guided walks of approximately 1 hour duration depart from the visitors centre hub at each location daily at 11am and 1pm (except Sunday and public holidays).

Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens, 230 Ashmore Rd, Benowa. Volunteers offer free guided walks on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Wednesday of the month and at other times by prior arrangement. Guided walks for special interest groups are also available for a small fee. Phone 0449 561 674.

Cairns Botanic Gardens, 78-96 Collins Ave, Edge Hill. Free guided walks of 1-1.5hrs duration depart from the Friends House, Monday- Friday at 10am.

Many regional parks and botanic gardens offer self-guided walks that locals and visitors can take at their leisure. Maps and information are available onsite.

Monthly Meetings

Northern Districts Horticultural Society’s Monthly Meetings. If you are a garden lover or gardener and you would like to increase and share your knowledge you would be most welcome to attend the Northern Districts Horticultural Society’s Monthly Meetings held on the last Monday of each month. We meet at the Wavell Heights Community Hall in Edinburgh Castle Road, Wavell Heights. Meetings include a Guest Speaker, display and judging of member’s entries of flowers, pot plants, floral art, fruit/veg and cooking. Visitors welcome. Info Noel Prior: ph. Floral Art Society of Queensland Inc. is a society for those who love flower arranging and floral design. The society & aims to promote participation & enjoyment of Floral Art through floral shows, displays & demonstrations. Meetings are held on the 4th Monday of each Month at 9.30 a.m. at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha Auditorium, Mt. Coot-tha Road Toowong. Admission of $7.00 per meeting is payable at the door and a lucky door ticket is issued to each person attending the meeting. Tea and coffee is available before the meeting. Cactus & Succulent Society of Qld Inc. Meetings are held on the last Monday of the month at the Salisbury Senior Citizens Centre, 87 Cripps st, Salisbury. The Society For Growing Potted Plants Inc. Meets 2nd Saturday of each month (except January) Time: 1.15pm. Uniting Church Hall, 52 Merthyr Road, New Farm. The Stafford Garden Club. The OES Hall, cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St, Kedron. The club meets every third Thursday of each month (Feb to Nov). We meet at 9.30am to have a cuppa, to buy from the trade table and to view displays. Our meeting starts at 10 am. Our motto is: “Friendship through Gardening”. Visitors are welcome.

Botanical Bazaar. Country Paradise Parklands, Nerang. Botanical Bazaar is the Gold Coast Garden Festival where naturally wild, urban gardeners and nature lovers connect. North Brisbane Orchid Society Annual Show. Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Auditorium, Mt Coot-tha Rd, Toowong. Open Saturday 8.30am-3.30pm and Sunday 8.30am-3pm. There will be a magnificent display of the orchid entries, plants and cultural supplies for sale, potting demonstrations and cultural information from experienced growers, a raffle to be drawn on the Sunday and refreshments available at reasonable prices. Entry is $4.00 for adults and children under 14 are free.

21-25 August

9th Native Orchid Conference & Show. Strathpine Community Centre, 199 Gympie Rd, Strathpine, Qld. The Australasian Native Orchid Society Conference and Show will have the best display of Australasian orchids in flower which should thrill not only the orchid enthusiast but also the general public. ANOS actively promotes the conservation and the preservation of our orchid heritage. Through our show we hope to educate the general public and let you see the wide range of colours, shapes and sizes that exist in our own orchids. Of course the very flashy ‘King Orchid’ will be there but does the public know that there are six different varieties of ‘King Orchids’? As well as the flowering orchids, there will be an orchid photographic exhibition and botanical art exhibition and sales plus orchids and orchid supplies for sale from Australian and overseas vendors ranging from seedlings to orchids in flower. How to Garden Organically with Annette McFarlane. North Lakes Library, 10 The Corso, North Lakes, 4509. Time: 11am-1pm. Annette McFarlane shows you how to welcome birds and frogs, plus bees and other beneficial insects back by adopting organic gardening methods. Topics covered include composting and organic matter, fertilizer options, organic certification, varieties of fruit, vegetables and herbs to plant, as well as organic pest control. Brisbane Organic Growers Inc (BOGI) Fair. Peace Hall, 102 McDonald Road Windsor. The theme of this year's event is Compost. Annette McFarlane will speak during the morning program on balancing browns and greens - getting your carbon/nitrogen ratio right. Free demonstrations and talks. Lots of gardening advice. Free animal nursery for the children. Stalls, selling herbs, books, seeds, plants, jams, tools and more. Relax with friends in the BOGI Cafe. Browse the produce from member's suburban gardens. Native Plants Queensland Wildflower Spectacle and Plants Market. Auditorium at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, Toowong. Glorious display of the diverse native flora of our state as well as features by NPQ branches on the theme 'Colour your garden with Native Plants'. Displays by local environmental and eco groups including bats and frogs; books and useful brochures will be available, and the Brookfield CWA will provide lovely refreshments. There is also the spectacular Plants Market with a huge range of Native Plants for all situations, from rockeries and small containers, to large gardens and natural areas. If you are looking for plants that are popular or rare and unusual, you will find a variety to suit all areas. Expert advice is available direct from the growers on plant selection and care as well as from members of NPQ. Prices are low and many plants can not be found in commercial nurseries, so come and find a favourite or one of Australia's unique plants just right for your needs. Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Spring Show. Canungra School of Arts Hall. Green Heart Fair, Carindale Recreation Reserve, Bedivere St, Carindale 4152. Brisbane's biggest south side sustainability fair. Join Annette McFarlane for one-on-one questions and answers, plus free talks by Annette and other presenters. Pick up your free BCC native plants at the fair. The Gold Coast District Orchid Society 2019 Spring Show. Albert Waterways Community Centre, cnr Hooker & Sunshine Blvd Mermaid Waters. This is a judged Orchid and Foliage show. 10 fabulous traders will be selling Orchids., Bromeliads, Cactus, Succulents and growing needs. There will be a members plant sale table and potting demonstrations. Refreshments are available provided by Espresso Xcellence as well as Lucky Draws and Raffles. Admission is $4.00 for Adults and children under 12 are free. The show will be open on Friday from 8am-4.30pm and Saturday from 8am-3pm. The venue is wheel chair friendly with plenty of parking for buses and cars. more info....

Floral Design Show: The Floral Art Society of Queensland are holding their Annual Open Show “Floriferous Forms” at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha Auditorium, Mt Coot-tha. Visitors can enjoy the Floral Designs on display, view design demonstrations throughout both days and watch the fast paced “Ready, Steady Snip” competitions. Children can make their own arrangements for free under the guidance of one of our society members. Cost: $4 for adults (school children are free). Open Garden-Viola’s Patch. 280 Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road, Bahrs Scrub. Neil and Viola are avid gardeners who have opened their garden to the public for charity since the year 2000. Featured on Gardening Australia in 2015, thousands have come through the front gates and experience a beautiful hidden paradise. For those who return every year 2019 will hold some new horticultural surprises. Quota Beenleigh the beneficiaries of the opening hope the crowd will come again this year to spend the day roaming at leisure or be a part of a guided walk with Viola.
